SKLAR LAB:
Two positions are available in the lab of Dr. Sklar within the Laboratory of Psychiatric and Neurodevelopmental Genetics (LPNG) at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. The LPNG focuses on detecting and mapping genes for complex psychiatric diseases. The work entails positional cloning, candidate gene and haplotype mapping strategies to find disease genes for ADHD, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Subsequent molecular biological experiments such as RNA expression monitoring are also anticipated. Genomic technologies including high-throughput SNP discovery and genotyping will be utilized. The position requires an M.D. or Ph.D. degree in genetics, genomics, molecular biology, or related field.
The projects involve a diverse group of scientists from many disciplines: phenotypic assessment, statistical genetics, epidemiology, bioinformatics and genomic technologies. These scientists are based at the MGH Molecular Neurgenetics Unit (J Gusella), in the MGH Unit of Psychiatric and Neurodevelopmental Genetics (D. Pauls) the MGH ADHD Genetics Research Program (S. Faraone), and the Whitehead Institute Center for Genome Research (Eric Lander and Mark Daly).
Two positions are available in the lab of Dr. Sklar at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School for highly motivated individuals who want to contribute to an exciting, ambitious effort to understand psychiatric disorders.
Projects are primarily focused on schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and might include:
· Large-scale genotyping and genome-wide association studies
· Large-scale genotyping, deep sequencing of candidate genes, whole genome sequencing of patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, creation of iPS cell from patients as cellular models of psychiatric disease, epigenetic modifications of DNA, fine mapping of candidate genes from our association studies, biological follow-up of disease associated variation to find causal variants and establish cellular assays for chemical screening, investigation of environmental variables associated with genetic risk though use of Swedish national registry data.
PhD in genetics, genetics, bioinformatics, statistical genetics, cell biology, neurobiology, stem cell biology or related fields. Must have excellent computer skills and ability to perform basic quantitative analysis of large data sets. More advanced statistics or programming skills a plus. Requires effective oral and written communication skills along with meticulous laboratory technique and recording skills. Postdoctoral fellows in the Sklar lab work closely with scientists at the Broad and are have appointments at both Harvard Medical School and the Broad Institute.
